Trump Plans To Leave His Mark On Washington By Building A Paris

Trump Plans To Leave His Mark On Washington By Building A Paris-Like Arch Near The Lincoln Memorial

In October 2025, Trump hosted a dinner for a group of donors. During this event at White House, he announced his future project of constructing an arch near the Lincoln Memorial. The arch’s design is based on Paris’s Arc de Triomphe and serves as a way to celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day.

Trump stated that “It’s going to be really beautiful,” while speaking at the donors’ dinner. Three small models are also displayed during the dinner to depict the project’s actual value and to discuss the construction process. This project is part of his vision to modernize and redesign Washington. He also planned to extend the White House by investing $250 million.

Design, Scale, and Site: What We Know So Far

Trump discussed the exact spot of construction: just west of the Lincoln Memorial. This spot near the Arlington Memorial Bridge is still undeveloped and considered perfect for constructing a new architecture.

The arch will present a beautiful view for people coming from Arlington National Cemetery. Its design has fancy columns and a golden Lady Liberty statue at the top. Donald Trump said, “Let’s build something like the Arc de Triomphe in that space; it would be beautiful when you drive or fly in.”

Funding, Permits, and Political Path Ahead

The actual cost for this arch is not disclosed yet, but since Trump announced $250 million for White House expansion, the leftover funds will be used for it. Talking about potential funding, Trump stated, “We have some money left over from the ballroom. Maybe we use that.”

The donors showed their consent and were also ready to donate to this construction. However, the project’s official approval is still pending as the National Planning Commission will visit the location and pass it after full consideration.

Reactions Across the Aisle and Public Square

The supporters of this project consider it a great addition to national monuments and a way to express the architectural expertise. According to the former chair of the National Capital Planning Commission, “Federal law requires that the proposed arch must first be put through the commission’s review and approval process.”

On the other hand, critics argue that it will disturb the historical balance of the National Mall, viewing it as a way of constructing a personal legacy in a public area. Preservationalists and urban planners also have several concerns regarding skyline beauty and the visual impact of existing historical buildings.

Legacy, Symbolism, and the Road Forward

The arch’s project shows Trump’s focus on increasing the architectural beauty of Washington. In history,  Paris’s Arc de Triomphe was built to pay tribute to the country’s army. Trump is doing something similar to celebrate American independence. This monument will become a strong representation of Trump’s presidency, constructed during his rule as the independent states “Stands to disrupt the Lincoln Memorial’s visual and symbolic integrity.”. The project team will soon submit its official plan to the federal commission for approval.
